The 101 of affiliate marketing

We are not going to throw a boring definition your way. Instead, let us have an example with a company called VintageFishingRods and a blogger called Justin.

The company is selling – well, you guessed it – vintage fishing rods and they want to scale their business through affiliate marketing. They ask Justin to promote their product on his blog where he writes about fishing tips.

Justin agrees and incorporates links to the company’s products into his blog posts in hopes of generating some income. In comes Noelle. She is an avid reader of Justin’s blog and she absolutely loves his take on fishing.

As she is reading through one of his blog posts, she sees a link to an absolutely stunning vintage fishing rod that she must have. She clicks the link, checks out the fishing rod, but decides to purchase it at the end of the month since she is short on cash.

Noelle visits VitageFishingRod’s website and buys the fishing rod later that month, and Justin receives a small cut for the sale. Here is an overview of the entire process so it is a little easier to understand. Do not worry. It can be quite a mouthful.

You might wonder how Justin can receive a small cut when Noelle did not actually purchase the product through Justin’s link. In comes cookies.

Not chocolate chip cookies but little packages of data that are stored on computers.

Each time an affiliate link is clicked, a cookie is placed on the customer’s computer. The cookie usually lasts for more than 30 days but varies depending on the affiliate program you choose.

With this cookie, you are able to still receive your commission even though the customer does not purchase the product straight away.

Let us say your referral clicks your link but closes the browser immediately after because of a yelling child in the background. The referral then remembers the great deal on web hosting 23 days later and navigates to the site you referred to to complete the purchase.

You still receive the commission.

Let us take Bluehost for example. They pay their affiliates $65 for every single sale they make – no matter the plan the customer chooses to purchase. That is an example of a really transparent commission structure.

Not all programs are as transparent – take Kinsta for example.

Kinsta is also a web hosting provider like Bluehost but their commission structure is way different. They pay their affiliates anywhere from $50 to $500 based on the type of plan they refer. Furthermore, you will receive 10% monthly recurring commissions.

Now, what the heck is monthly recurring commissions, right? Well, you will essentially earn a small commission for the lifetime of the customer – enabling you to generate a fairly impressive passive income.

If you refer 10 people each month to Kinsta’s smallest plan, the Starter plan, you will be making around $860/month after a year in passive income as seen below.

However, often it can be quite confusing to organize all of the affiliate programs you are signed up for. In comes affiliate networks.

WP Engine was founded back in 2010 by Ben Matcalfe, Bullen Wilson, and Jason Cohen and has since then grown to be one of the largest managed WordPress hosting providers.

They are priced very competitively compared to other managed WordPress hosting providers — and they even include their groundbreaking Genesis Framework with 35+ Studio themes.

If that is not a selling point, we do not know what is. Heck, they are even the go-to choice for some huge companies such as Soundcloud and AMD. And we have been using them for a good while but has since then changed to Bluehost.

Commission

With the WP Engine affiliate program you will either make $200 per sale or 100% of the referral’s first month payment — whichever is higher. You will also earn 35% of every StudioPress theme your referral purchases.

And to top it all off, WP Engine pays out bonuses if you reach a certain number of sales each month. Here is an overview of the bonus structure.

Their low price point makes them quite easy to sell. We have been partnering up with Bluehost and we are very pleased with their affiliate program. The commission structure is very transparent and the support team is awesome.

Commission

Bluehost will pay you $65 per sale you convert. It does not matter which plan your referral chooses to purchase. You will receive the $65 either way.

Bluehost actually reached out to us and bumped up our affiliate commission. They probably do it to keep their affiliates around but it was definitely a nice gesture.

Bluehost’s affiliate program comes with a 90-day cookie duration if you sign up for their in-house affiliate network and a 120-day cookie duration if you sign up for their affiliate program hosted through the Commission Junction network.

Kinsta was founded in 2013 with one sole purpose. To change the status quo when it comes to managed WordPress hosting. And they certainly did. It has never been easier to set up and manage a WordPress than with the managed WordPress solution that Kinsta offers.

Their plans start at $30/month and their servers are powered by the Google Cloud Platform securing lightning fast speeds. It is quite a pricey hosting solution but they certainly live up to what they promise.

Commission

With the Kinsta affiliate program you will make anywhere between $50 and $500 for every sale plus a 10% monthly recurring commission for as long as your referral uses Kinsta. Imagine the passive income you could build from the Kinsta affiliate program.

With the Kinsta affiliate program, there is a 60-day cookie duration to ensure that all of your affiliate clicks turn into cash. Even if your referral waits 59 days with their purchase, you will still make the commission as long as they buy within 60 days.

Cloudways was founded in 2011 and is a highly scalable managed cloud hosting provider that is primarily used by developers but also supports WordPress and a ton of other CMS platforms. Heck, you even have ecommerce integrations and a one-click WordPress installation.

We have never actually tried Cloudways but know quite a lot of people who have tried them and they are very pleased with them – and also their affiliate program for that matter.

Commission

With the Cloudways affiliate program you can choose between two different commission structures depending on whether you want your commission upfront or build a passive income from their affiliate program.

With Slab you earn anywhere between $50 and $125 upfront per sale depending on how many sales you convert. Take a look at how the commission is structured.

We have tried HostGator a couple of time but we tend to stick to Bluehost since their customer support is better – in our humble opinion.

Commission

Their commission structure is based on a fixed cut for every sale you convert. The more sales you convert, the bigger your commission will be. Very straight-forward.

You will earn anywhere between $65 and $125 upfront per sale you convert. It really comes down to how many sales you convert.

  • 1 – 5 sales earns you $65 per sale

That is almost double as much as you can earn with Bluehost but in our opinion Bluehost just comes with a stronger brand awareness and a more solid product.

The HostGator affiliate program comes with a 60-day cookie duration which ensures that you will have an easier time converting even more sales.

They have some crazy discounts. In fact, they are currently offering 4 years of shared hosting including a free SSL certificate for a mere $47.52. If you cannot sell that to your users, you probably should not become a blogger.

Commission

With the Hostinger affiliate program you will make 60% from every sale you convert. The more the plan costs, the more you earn in commission. Let us give you an example.

You bring in a client that bought Hostinger’s VPS 4 pack for a full year for a total of $521.99. From those, $90.59 is deducted (VAT). You will then earn 60% from the remaining amount – resulting in a $258.84 commission.

If you are doing exceptionally well and is considered a “High-performance partner” your commission is bumped up to 100%.

The cookie is stored on the customer’s device for up to 30 days meaning that you will be able to still receive your commission if the customer chooses to purchase a Hostinger plan 29 days after clicking on your affiliate link.

We have never actually tried DreamHost because we have found Bluehost to be the better choice but when it comes to the size of the commission DreamHost may have the upper hand.

They offer managed WordPress hosting starting at $15/month and the Flywheel user experience is next-level. We have used it to a couple of our websites and we really like their product but tend to stick to Bluehost due to the lower prices.

Commission

You are able to earn up to $500 per sale with the Flywheel affiliate program. To be more specific, you will earn 300% of the first month’s payment on any plan for every referral you send to them.

If you refer 10 people per month and they all sign up for the cheapest hosting plan (paid monthly), you will earn $450 per month and $5.400 per year in commission.

SiteGround is founded by Ivo Tzenov and is a Bulgarian company. They now host over 2 million domains worldwide. Pretty impressive, right?

To be honest, we think they have a really boring looking website and their prices are quite steep compared to some of the competitors. But as long as their hosting solutions work and they have a great customer support team it will work.

Commission

You will earn between $50 – $100 depending on how many sales you drive to SiteGround. If you drive more than 21 sales, you will earn even more. Here is an overview of the commission structure:

  • 1 – 5 sales earns you $50 per sale
  • 6 – 10 sales earns you $75 per sale
  • 11 – 20 sales earns you $100 per sale
  • 21+ sales earns you a custom commission

InMotion has more than 20 years of experience in the web hosting industry — quite impressive if you take a look at their website (which is not exactly sleek).

Their prices are quite steep starting at $5.99/month given that you pay two years ahead. That is well above Hostinger starting at $1.59/month (paid two years ahead).

The reason we included InMotion in this list is definitely not because of the product their offer but because of their amazing affiliate program.

Commission

You will earn $50 for the two first sales and $100 for every sale after that. It is quite an impressive commission considering how easy it is to convert the sales if you have a decent amount of traffic.

The cookie lasts for 90 days which ensures that you will convert all the people that click your links and buy the product within 90 days.

The very first thing you should know about A2 Hosting is that they are 20x faster than any other web host on the market (or so they say). We honestly do not think they are that much faster but we guess it is a great selling point.

Their affiliate program is awesome and comes with quite a cool 2nd tier affiliate program that you can use to generate even more money through your affiliate marketing strategy.

Commission

They pay anywhere between $55 – $125 depending on how many sales you convert. If you convert way more than 21 sales per month, you will be able to talk to your affiliate manager and discuss an even larger commission.

Finally, a company with a bonkers website and even founded by a guy with a killer name – Nathan Berry. It almost sounds as cool as James Bond.

ConvertKit is a full-featured email service provider (ESP) with just about everything you need to boost your email marketing strategy and build a killer email list for your blog.

Commission

ConvertKit is not only a great email marketing platform. They also allow bloggers like you and me to generate an impressive passive income through their affiliate program.

It comes with a 30% recurring income so you will earn a passive income for each customer you refer for as long as they remain ConvertKit customers.

Let us give you an example of how much you can make with the ConvertKit affiliate program. If you refer 100 customers to ConvertKit you would be making $870/mo.

They do not boast with their cookie duration so we had to go on a full blown cheetah hunt to track it down. After a few emails back and forth, we received an answer.

13. Constant Contact

Constant Contact is another full-featured email service provider (ESP) with quite an impressive list of products. They recently got rid of their awful looking design and rebranded the whole company.

Now it is just a thousand times harder to navigate their website and I had a hard time tracking down their affiliate program. However, their products still work.

Commission

You will earn $5 for every trial sign up and a staggering $105 when they sign up for a new Constant Contact account. Bonkers deal right here, friend! There is no real hocus-pocus to the commission structure. It is dead simple.

You are also able to negotiate a higher commission if you are converting a bunch of sales so what are you waiting for? Sign up.

Cookies last for 120 days which is almost twice as long as most other affiliate programs. If your referral clicks your link, waits 119 days and then signs up for a Constant Contact account you will still receive your commission.

Besides the weird name, AWeber has a lot to offer and has some killer value propositions. We are huge fans of their values and almost switched to AWeber solely based on their value proposition.

They are also doing email marketing as ConvertKit and Constant Contact and for a relatively cheap price point – starting at $19/mo.

Commission

With a 30% recurring commission you should be able to build yourself a sweet passive income. If you refer 100 customers to AWeber and they all stay active customers, you will have a passive income of  $570/mo – given that they all buy the cheapest plan and pay on a monthly basis.

Their cookie duration is friggin’ bonanza… are you ready? It lasts for a full friggin’ year. How awesome is that? You will for sure catch all the fish in the sea with such duration.
